I loved Art class in High School and College, which was the easiest A's for me. Unfortunately, I didn't pursue in this discipline/major because of other top interests-Human Services. However, I'll never forget the "good ole" times drawing when I was a kid. I had a collection of drawings that I kept in this artbook, which I have still to this day.

It all started in Elementary School, where I would love to color and draw. There was one time that my drawing of a bird in 3rd grade got notice by my teacher and boasted about this to other classes-including my older sister, which she shares to this day! Another "drawing" story was in 4th grade when I saw a sign that their will be a "drawing" for a Pink Panther poster hanging in the black board of my classroom. Without the teacher announcing it, I started to draw the picture of the Pink Panther. When I was about to just finish, the teacher anounce she'll be passing slips of paper where we have to put our name for the "drawing" of one name. I slowly put my drawing away and smiled with embarassment-not telling anybody else what I did. That worked payed off as I did end up winning the "drawing" for the poster!

As I got older, life got busy and I really haven't had the chance to draw as I would like to. However, I can reflect and look back at my old drawings with laughter. I share my work with close friends when they come over to my house. Since I don't draw as I used to, I can acknowledge artwork of close friends as I boast about them below:

I had to write about an artist and his/her particular artwork for a final in one class. I chose Albrecht Durer, a German artist, who had some interesting "religious" art work. One of them was the "Knight, Death, and Devil" that I chose to give my personal analysis. I was so into it that my Art professor gave me an A!

""... Knight, Death and the Devil, also known as The Rider, represents an allegory on Christian salvation. Unflustered either by Death who is standing in front of him with his hour-glass, or by the Devil behind him, an armoured knight is riding along a narrow defile, accompanied by his loyal hound. This represents the steady route of the faithful, through all of life's injustice, to God who is symbolized by the castle in the background. The dog symbolizes faith, and the lizard religious zeal. The horse and rider, like other preliminary studies made by Durer, are derived from the canon of proportions drawn up by Leonardo da Vinci. ...". "--from Valdosta Museum

Shop Once, Give Twice! Want to shop for not one, but two great causes?

Schedule your holiday shopping trip for Friday evening, December 2, at Ten Thousand Villages, 867 Grand Avenue in St. Paul. On that evening, between 5:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m., Ten Thousand Villages will give 20% of all sale proceeds to the Minnesota Literacy Council.
Your purchases that night will help two great causes: literacy in our community and Third World artisans whose work is sold at Ten Thousand Villages. You can pick up folk art, heirloom decorations, musical instruments, jewelry and much more – all of which is made by talented craftspeople from 32 countries.

The mission of Ten Thousand Villages is to provide vital, fair income to Third World people by marketing their handicrafts and telling their stories in North America. Ten Thousand Villages works with artisans who would otherwise be unemployed or underemployed. The income from their handicrafts helps pay for food, education, health care or housing.

So, mark “Shopping - Ten Thousand Villages” on your calendar for December 2, 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Your purchases that night will make a difference – many times over.

  • Debbie Hannah Skinner - Painter, Artist, Musician, Speaker - The Bible Teacher with a Paintbrush

"The fact that Debbie Hannah Skinner is an artist is not the only thing that distinguishes her from other speakers. You see, she is a "heartist," someone who communicates from her heart to yours through a unique blend of words, art, drama and music. Debbie's passion is to point women to Jesus Christ by skillfully weaving her words and water-media paintings with wisdom from Scripture. By sharing insights from her years as a professional educator and seminary trained Bible teacher, through Mirror Ministries Debbie has touched the hearts of women across the United States and overseas. By drawing upon her own family's varied life experiences - ranging from downsizing to dyslexia - she encourages and inspires women to find hope in Christ through all the ups and downs of life. Debbie brings her audiences a powerful message that is firmly grounded in Scripture and presented with the soft Southern sensitivity and sense of humor she acquired while growing up in Alabama. Sometimes Debbie paints as she speaks, other times she uses her paintings as visual aids. Either way, by using the same creativity required to create a masterpiece painting, she custom designs her presentations to meet the unique needs of your group. www.dhskinner.com"
