S.F. doctor with Cyrus ties to speak about new book at UMM Feb. 24 "Paul Linde still wonders why he does what he does. In the myriad medical careers he had to choose from, why psychiatry? And as his career in the field unfolds, why, in middle age, does he still venture daily into the chaotic, soul-chilling and often dangerous world of a big-city hospital’s psychiatric emergency room?
University of Minnesota, Morris students and the Morris community will have a chance to hear Linde answer those questions and others during the author’s visit Feb. 24 at UMM.
Linde’s book, “Danger to Self -- On the Front Line with an ER Psychiatrist,” is a vivid look at the patients, staff and politics alive in an environment most people can scarcely imagine, much less ever experience first-hand.
Linde will discuss the book and his career with a UMM psychology class in the morning, and during a book-signing and reading engagement at Briggs Library at noon.
The public is welcome to attend the gathering at Briggs.
Linde has ties to the Cyrus and Starbuck areas. His grandfather was Dr. Herman Linde, who lived and practiced medicine in the Cyrus area for more than 50 years.
Paul Linde grew up in Hastings and attended medical school at the University of Minnesota before moving to the San Francisco area.
“Danger to Self” was almost 10 years in the making. Linde first pitched the idea after writing his first book, “Of Spirits and Madness,” which chronicles his experiences as an American psychiatrist in Africa. He proposed “Danger to Self” in 2001, just after the 9-11 attacks.
“I had the drive to write the first book and I thought it would be easy to sell the second – it’s a sexy subject, psych emergency,” he said. “It was the perfect niche. This is what I do.”
But the book proposal was turned down by 25 editors. He revised it and pitched it again in 2002. This time, it was rejected by 20 more potential publishers. Even his agent quit on trying to push it.
“I sat on it for three years,” Linde said. “I revised it and sent it out again. It became kind of an obsession. I was trying to figure out why I stayed in medical school – writing was my first love. Why psychiatry? Why psych emergency? I really wrote it as a catharsis.”
Linde said much of the self-examination in the book was edited out, but what’s left – especially in the context of his day-to-day interactions on the job -- is compelling. The stories in it bring readers inside the walls of the psychiatric emergency room and among a cast of living, breathing “characters” – patients under the influence of drugs, alcohol, paranoia and other physical and mental illnesses.
He tells gripping tales of professionals trying to control patients and alleviate their suffering while at the same time trying to maintain some sense of normality in their own lives. Woven throughout the book are glimpses of a profession in peril due to the influence of health insurance and pharmaceutical companies, the government and even other psychiatrists who are more concerned with procedure than care.
Linde’s intent was to tell realistic, unvarnished stories that, when combined, widen the scope on acute mental illnesses and those who suffer from them.
“I think it helps make the seriously mentally ill less invisible,” he said. “I hope it increases awareness of what people are going through. And, politically, I hope it changes the way commitment laws are written.”
While delving deeply into his demanding work, Linde said he’s not felt himself slipping.
"Thank God, no," he said. "I know there’s the possibility that stuff happens and you lose it. I think I have problems and then I go to work and I’m with people who are so gummed up with alcohol, drugs, getting beaten as a child. My life’s good. It makes you appreciate what you have. It causes gratitude."

I know that you do not have the love of God in your hearts.
Greg introduced a tool (the Rorschach test) that psychologists use to reflect what is inside a person. What it does is present an ambiguous image which gives the viewer the responsibility to make something of it. What we see is partly a function of what we tend to see and focus on in general. So, if we are generally upbeat, optimistic and hopeful, the chances are good that we’ll see something pleasant in the image. The opposite is also true. The principle here is that we reflect what is inside of us onto what is outside of us.
The reason Greg introduced this tool is because the principle applies to how we make our way through complex/ambiguous things like life in general and the Bible in particular. An example of this is found in today’s text. Jesus acknowledged that the Pharisees studied the Scriptures diligently, but because they didn’t have the love of God in their hearts, they were not able to see the love of God and the fulfillment of that love in the Old Testament.
In a similar way, when we have the love of God in us, life will be seen through that lens. Greg challenged us to let the love of God overpower the other things that may reside in our hearts. Some of those things might be hurt from our past, consumerism, violence, sexual issues, selfishness, nationalism or legalism. When we allow the love of God to live in our heart that love comes into conflict with these things and it is up to us to choose love rather than these dangerous ways of viewing the world.

" multiple-personality disorder, or MPD, is a form of schizophrenia. The word "schizophrenia" is derived from the Latin root schizo- split and phrenia- mind. By strict definition, this would be a divided soul. Do not confuse this with being double-minded, which is a case of the same mind going in two directions. Schizophrenia is not simply a distraction or a temptation, but is an actual partitioning of the mind or soul. This is not someone being strongly tempted or even seduced by an evil spirit to go a different way, but is when the person actually changes personalities and often does not even remember what transpires when the other personality is active. The schizophrenic would be a soul or mind that is actually divided, partitioned or fragmented into different parts. This would indicate that the same spirit of man would have different personalities. Schizophrenia indicates two personalities, like Dr. Jeckel and Mr. Hyde, but MPD indicates multiples, or possibly more than two personalities. This is also becoming known as an Associative Disorder within psychiatric medicine.
Obviously this is not normal, and therefore is a spiritual matter. There is an evil spirit involved in this "soul-split," but the problem in ministering to this is not just in casting out the spirit, but also in determining what allowed the initial entry to the spirit. As in most all cases of demon occupation, the reason why the demon has access and is in the person is because a "legal" portal of entry gave him access initially. In most situations this is sin, but in this case, as we will see, it is usually extreme trauma. The rule in demonology and casting out demons is: when evil spirits are removed the cause of occupation must be known and the entry portal must be closed to keep them out.

In 1926, 13-year-old Sanford Clark was taken from his home in Saskatchewan, Canada (with the permission of his mother and reluctant father) by his uncle, Gordon Stewart Northcott.[1] Northcott took Clark to a ranch in Wineville, California, where he regularly beat and sexually abused the boy—until August 1928, when the police took Clark into custody after a family member informed them of the situation.[2] Clark revealed that he was forced to help Northcott and his mother, Sarah Louise Northcott, in killing several young boys after Northcott had kidnapped and sexually molested them.[2][3] The police found no bodies at the ranch—Clark said they were dumped in the desert—but discovered body parts, blood-stained axes, and personal effects belonging to missing children. The Northcotts fled to Canada, but were arrested and extradited to the United States. Sarah Louise initially confessed to the murders,[2] including that of Walter Collins.
