S.F. doctor with Cyrus ties to speak about new book at UMM Feb. 24 "Paul Linde still wonders why he does what he does. In the myriad medical careers he had to choose from, why psychiatry? And as his career in the field unfolds, why, in middle age, does he still venture daily into the chaotic, soul-chilling and often dangerous world of a big-city hospital’s psychiatric emergency room?
University of Minnesota, Morris students and the Morris community will have a chance to hear Linde answer those questions and others during the author’s visit Feb. 24 at UMM.
Linde’s book, “Danger to Self -- On the Front Line with an ER Psychiatrist,” is a vivid look at the patients, staff and politics alive in an environment most people can scarcely imagine, much less ever experience first-hand.
Linde will discuss the book and his career with a UMM psychology class in the morning, and during a book-signing and reading engagement at Briggs Library at noon.
The public is welcome to attend the gathering at Briggs.
Linde has ties to the Cyrus and Starbuck areas. His grandfather was Dr. Herman Linde, who lived and practiced medicine in the Cyrus area for more than 50 years.
Paul Linde grew up in Hastings and attended medical school at the University of Minnesota before moving to the San Francisco area.
“Danger to Self” was almost 10 years in the making. Linde first pitched the idea after writing his first book, “Of Spirits and Madness,” which chronicles his experiences as an American psychiatrist in Africa. He proposed “Danger to Self” in 2001, just after the 9-11 attacks.
“I had the drive to write the first book and I thought it would be easy to sell the second – it’s a sexy subject, psych emergency,” he said. “It was the perfect niche. This is what I do.”
But the book proposal was turned down by 25 editors. He revised it and pitched it again in 2002. This time, it was rejected by 20 more potential publishers. Even his agent quit on trying to push it.
“I sat on it for three years,” Linde said. “I revised it and sent it out again. It became kind of an obsession. I was trying to figure out why I stayed in medical school – writing was my first love. Why psychiatry? Why psych emergency? I really wrote it as a catharsis.”
Linde said much of the self-examination in the book was edited out, but what’s left – especially in the context of his day-to-day interactions on the job -- is compelling. The stories in it bring readers inside the walls of the psychiatric emergency room and among a cast of living, breathing “characters” – patients under the influence of drugs, alcohol, paranoia and other physical and mental illnesses.
He tells gripping tales of professionals trying to control patients and alleviate their suffering while at the same time trying to maintain some sense of normality in their own lives. Woven throughout the book are glimpses of a profession in peril due to the influence of health insurance and pharmaceutical companies, the government and even other psychiatrists who are more concerned with procedure than care.
Linde’s intent was to tell realistic, unvarnished stories that, when combined, widen the scope on acute mental illnesses and those who suffer from them.
“I think it helps make the seriously mentally ill less invisible,” he said. “I hope it increases awareness of what people are going through. And, politically, I hope it changes the way commitment laws are written.”
While delving deeply into his demanding work, Linde said he’s not felt himself slipping.
"Thank God, no," he said. "I know there’s the possibility that stuff happens and you lose it. I think I have problems and then I go to work and I’m with people who are so gummed up with alcohol, drugs, getting beaten as a child. My life’s good. It makes you appreciate what you have. It causes gratitude."

Greg introduced a tool (the Rorschach test) that psychologists use to reflect what is inside a person. What it does is present an ambiguous image which gives the viewer the responsibility to make something of it. What we see is partly a function of what we tend to see and focus on in general. So, if we are generally upbeat, optimistic and hopeful, the chances are good that we’ll see something pleasant in the image. The opposite is also true. The principle here is that we reflect what is inside of us onto what is outside of us.
The reason Greg introduced this tool is because the principle applies to how we make our way through complex/ambiguous things like life in general and the Bible in particular. An example of this is found in today’s text. Jesus acknowledged that the Pharisees studied the Scriptures diligently, but because they didn’t have the love of God in their hearts, they were not able to see the love of God and the fulfillment of that love in the Old Testament.
In a similar way, when we have the love of God in us, life will be seen through that lens. Greg challenged us to let the love of God overpower the other things that may reside in our hearts. Some of those things might be hurt from our past, consumerism, violence, sexual issues, selfishness, nationalism or legalism. When we allow the love of God to live in our heart that love comes into conflict with these things and it is up to us to choose love rather than these dangerous ways of viewing the world.

Better known as the DSM-IV, the manual is published by the American Psychiatric Association and covers all mental health disorders for both children and adults. It also lists known causes of these disorders, statistics in terms of gender, age at onset, and prognosis as well as some research concerning the optimal treatment approaches.
Mental Health Professionals use this manual when working with patients in order to better understand their illness and potential treatment and to help 3rd party payers (e.g., insurance) understand the needs of the patient. The book is typically considered the ‘bible’ for any professional who makes psychiatric diagnoses in the United States and many other countries. The DSM-IV-TR (Text Revision, 2000) consists of five axes (domains) on which disorder can be assessed. The five axes are:

Classification schemes may not apply to all cultures. The DSM is based on predominantly American research studies and has been said to have a decidedly American outlook, meaning that differing disorders or concepts of illness from other cultures (including personalistic rather than naturalistic explanations) may be neglected or misrepresented, while Western cultural phenomena may be taken as universal.[32] Culture-bound syndromes are those hypothesized to be specific to certain cultures (typically taken to mean non-Western or non-mainstream cultures); while some are listed in an appendix of the DSM-IV they are not detailed and there remain open questions about the relationship between Western and non-Western diagnostic categories and sociocultural factors, which are addressed from different directions by, for example, cross-cultural psychiatry or anthropology.

Healed from bulimia

Predictive programming comes in many forms and many degrees of subtlety. If you have never looked into this subject, you wouldn't even notice how often predictive programming is used in fiction. But when you know how to recognise the signs, you realise that the mainstream media is infested with it. As Alan Watt has said many times: "All fiction is propaganda", and that is so true. When you watch your favorite TV cop drama, you probably assume that it is produced solely for the purpose of providing drama and entertainment for your viewing pleasure. And that's true to an extent. But there's another side to it that most people rarely think about. And that's the fact that these types of programmes are also used as a way of conditioning our minds to accept certain ways of thinking about certain things. When we see a character in the drama react in a certain way to hearing news of a certain thing, we will then be far more likely to react in a similar way. Even though you know you have your own mind, and you know that you are an individual who is free to think in any way you choose, there's no getting away from the fact that you will be influenced by the way other people react to things. We've done it since the day we were born. For example, let's say your'e watching your favorite soap opera and one of the characters gets the wrong end of the stick and comes up with some crazy idea about how their partner is cheating on them. And then the character's friend says "See, there you go again with your crazy conspiracy theories". This is a typical example of counter-intelligence or propaganda, as it would have the effect of altering the way the viewer thinks about anyone who comes out with any valid idea about how things are not what they seem. Counter-intelligence is often used when a secret has leaked out into the public domain and the establishment tries to attach some false or ridiculous association to the secret so that people will not want to believe it. The term conspiracy theorist was invented for the purpose of discrediting anyone who disagrees with the establishment's interpretation of reality. Due to the effect of predictive programming over the last half century, the term "conspiracy theorist" is now so loaded with negativity that it has become more of an insult than a description.
Occult symbolism is also used extensively in the media, particularly in Hollywood movies, and especially in cartoons targeted at children. From the Wizard of Oz to Mickey Mouse to Buzz Lightyear, the symbolism is put right in your face - hidden in plain sight - and anyone who knows about occult symbolism can see it a mile off. I was amazed at how much occult symbolism is in the Toy Story movie. Virtually every scene contains images of pentagrams and other masonic symbols, like the compass and square.
The people who work in Hollywood are masters at their craft and we have to give them credit for what they do. Not only do they create some amazing movies that keep us entertained, they are also able to use those movies to imprint certain messages in our minds, and without most people being aware of it. Predictive programming isn't always a negative thing in my opinion, as it can be used for positive effects as well. It's a bit like electricity in that regard. " multiple-personality disorder, or MPD, is a form of schizophrenia. The word "schizophrenia" is derived from the Latin root schizo- split and phrenia- mind. By strict definition, this would be a divided soul. Do not confuse this with being double-minded, which is a case of the same mind going in two directions. Schizophrenia is not simply a distraction or a temptation, but is an actual partitioning of the mind or soul. This is not someone being strongly tempted or even seduced by an evil spirit to go a different way, but is when the person actually changes personalities and often does not even remember what transpires when the other personality is active. The schizophrenic would be a soul or mind that is actually divided, partitioned or fragmented into different parts. This would indicate that the same spirit of man would have different personalities. Schizophrenia indicates two personalities, like Dr. Jeckel and Mr. Hyde, but MPD indicates multiples, or possibly more than two personalities. This is also becoming known as an Associative Disorder within psychiatric medicine.
Obviously this is not normal, and therefore is a spiritual matter. There is an evil spirit involved in this "soul-split," but the problem in ministering to this is not just in casting out the spirit, but also in determining what allowed the initial entry to the spirit. As in most all cases of demon occupation, the reason why the demon has access and is in the person is because a "legal" portal of entry gave him access initially. In most situations this is sin, but in this case, as we will see, it is usually extreme trauma. The rule in demonology and casting out demons is: when evil spirits are removed the cause of occupation must be known and the entry portal must be closed to keep them out.

Headed by Dr. Sidney Gottlieb, the MK-ULTRA project was started on the order of CIA director Allen Dulles on April 13, 1953,[11] largely in response to Soviet, Chinese, and North Korean use of mind-control techniques on U.S. prisoners of war in Korea.[12] The CIA wanted to use similar methods on their own captives. In 1926, 13-year-old Sanford Clark was taken from his home in Saskatchewan, Canada (with the permission of his mother and reluctant father) by his uncle, Gordon Stewart Northcott.[1] Northcott took Clark to a ranch in Wineville, California, where he regularly beat and sexually abused the boy—until August 1928, when the police took Clark into custody after a family member informed them of the situation.[2] Clark revealed that he was forced to help Northcott and his mother, Sarah Louise Northcott, in killing several young boys after Northcott had kidnapped and sexually molested them.[2][3] The police found no bodies at the ranch—Clark said they were dumped in the desert—but discovered body parts, blood-stained axes, and personal effects belonging to missing children. The Northcotts fled to Canada, but were arrested and extradited to the United States. Sarah Louise initially confessed to the murders,[2] including that of Walter Collins. The Milgram experiment on obedience to authority figures was a series of notable social psychology experiments conducted by Yale University psychologist Stanley Milgram, which measured the willingness of study participants to obey an authority figure who instructed them to perform acts that conflicted with their personal conscience. Milgram first described his research in 1963 in an article published in the Journal of Abnormal and Social Psychology,[1] and later discussed his findings in greater depth in his 1974 book, Obedience to Authority: An Experimental View.[2]
The experiments began in July 1961, three months after the start of the trial of German Nazi war criminal Adolf Eichmann in Jerusalem. Milgram devised his psychological study to answer the question: "Was it that Eichmann and his accomplices in the Holocaust had mutual intent, in at least with regard to the goals of the Holocaust?" In other words, "Was there a mutual sense of morality among those involved?" Milgram's testing suggested that it could have been that the millions of accomplices were merely following orders, despite violating their deepest moral beliefs. The experiments have been repeated many times, with consistent results within societies, but different percentages across the globe.[3] The experiments were also controversial, and considered by some scientists to be unethical and physically or psychologically abusive. Psychologist Diana Baumrind considered the experiment "harmful because it may cause permanent psychological damage and cause people to be less trusting in the future."[4] Such criticism motivated more thorough review boards and committee reviews for working with human subjects.

The age of deception is here and thanks to digital technology is now even easier to fool people in mass numbers. A photograph, a video, and a any sound can be digitally manipulated to show something that is not really there. This leads us to the topic of why( in part) the US will be switching all broadcasts from analog to digital. This teaching overviews a secret Pentagon psychotronics technology known as Silent Sound Spread Spectrum (SSSS) that has been fully operational since the early 1990s. The physical, emotional, and psychological effects of this technology were so severe that 200,000 Iraqi troops surrended en masse without firing even a single shot against US led coalition forces. Why would eight year veterans of Middle Eastern warfare (with Iran 1980-1988) behave this way? Simple. They were subjected to a technology that was so extreme and incomprehensible that they were suddenly reduced to the level of compliant children and felt grateful to still be alive in the wake of their mind-wrenching experience."

"Federal authorities and local police today are scouring James Holmes' apartment for evidence as a newly released video gives some insight into the man who allegedly killed 12 people and injured 58 people at a packed screening of the latest Batman movie, "The Dark Knight Rises."
Overnight, ABC News obtained exclusive video and photos of Holmes. The video was recorded six years ago when Holmes was 18.
In the video, he is standing among his peers at a science camp at Miramar College in San Diego talking about "temporal illusions."
"Over the course of the summer I've been working with a temporal illusion. It's an illusion that allows you to change the past," Holmes said in the video.
He appears slightly nervous speaking to the group but also extremely intelligent.
By most accounts, Holmes lived the life of a normal teen – with a particular interest in science.
This was how he was introduced at the seminar: "His goals are to become a researcher and to make scientific discoveries. In personal life, he enjoys playing soccer and strategy games and his dream is to own a slurpee machine."
Though Holmes was apparently a gifted scientist who had received a federal grant to work on his Ph.D. at one of the most competitive neuroscience programs in the country, he was a loner who -- oddly for a young scientist -- seemed to have no Internet presence.
Officials Saturday said they now have "evidence of calculation and deliberation," in the way he allegedly planned and prepared for the shooting, beginning to buy weapons and ammunition two months ago.
Holmes is originally from San Diego, where he once reportedly worked as a camp counselor for underprivileged children. He was an honors student at Westview High School, but did not walk in his graduation ceremony.
Holmes, 24, is currently in custody for Friday's massacre in Aurora, Colo.
Dressed in full riot gear, Holmes allegedly entered from an emergency exit in the front right corner of the theater before releasing something that witnesses identify as tear gas or a smoke bomb. From there, he allegedly sprayed the sold-out theater with a storm of bullets, injuring and killing both adults and children.
Among the dead include: Micayla Medek, 23; Alex Sullivan, 27, who was attending the movie for his birthday; Ohio native Matt McQuinn; Alex Teves, 24; Alexander J. Boik, 18; Rebecca Ann Wingo, 32; and Gordon W. Cowden, 51.
Two other people died at the hospital, including 24-year-old aspiring sportscaster Jessica Ghawi. Police said 30 people remained hospitalized with 11 of them in critical condition. Bullets from the shooting spree tore through the theater and into adjoining theaters, where at least one other person was struck and injured.
John Larimer, a member of the Navy, was also confirmed by his family to be among the dead. The family said they were notified at their Illinois home around midnight today by a Navy notification team that Larimer was dead.
Staff Sgt. Jesse Childress was an Air Force reservist assigned to units at Buckley Air Force Base in Colorado was killed in the shooting. He was 29. Air Force Lt. Col. Pat Walsh said that Childress was respected in the 310th Force Support Squadron.
Military veteran Jonathan T. Blunk of Aurora, Colo., was killed as he threw himself over a friend to keep her from getting shot. The 26-year-old worked at a hardware store.
Veronica Moser-Sullivan, 6, was killed, according to The Associated Press. The girl's mother, Ashley Moser, 25, is in critical condition after she was shot in the throat and abdomen, said her aunt, Annie Dalton.
Aurora Police Chief Daniel Oates announced Friday that Holmes had purchased four guns at local shops and more than 6,000 rounds of ammunition on the Internet in the past 60 days.
Inside James Holmes' Apartment
Overnight, new pictures have emerged of several explosions in a Colorado field where investigators took chemical materials recovered from Holmes' apartment.
Crews reportedly transported the materials by dump truck to the field so that they could be ignited -- and determined if they were in fact explosives.
Federal authorities and local police have now pulled all of the potential explosives from Holmes' apartment after gaining entry and eliminating potentially explosive traps Saturday.
The apartment, about 800 square feet contained several trip wires rigged to trigger explosions.
Scattered throughout the living room were 30 explosive devices - including jars with chemicals and 30 shells with explosive powder - similar to large fireworks.
Bomb squads carefully neutralized the two main threats at the entrance of his apartment using a "water shot" and remote-controlled robot.
Oates said the suspect's intentions were clear.
"What we're seeing here is some evidence of calculation and deliberation," Oates said. Holmes was an honors student and Ph.D. candidate at the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus. He was enrolled in the graduate program in neuroscience until he voluntarily withdrew from the program in June.
He was one of six recipients of a Neuroscience Training Grant from the National Institutes of Health, which funds pre-thesis Ph.D. students in the neuroscience program at the Anschutz Medical Campus.
According to the university, the focus of the program is on "training outstanding neuroscientists and academicians who will make significant contributions to neurobiology."
He reportedly failed a preliminary exam before pulling out of the program, according to ABC News' Denver affiliate KMGH-TV. It is unclear if the exam was related to his decision to leave the program.
KMGH was told that even if Holmes did fail the exam, he would not have been kicked out of the program because students have an opportunity to improve their grades with an oral exam.
"I don't know any of that and I don't know that we have any of that information on him," Anschutz Medical Campus spokeswoman Jacque Montgomery told ABCNews.com.
The university said Holmes gave no reason for asking to withdraw from the program.

The shooting was the worst in the U.S. since the Nov. 5, 2009, attack at Fort Hood, Texas. An Army psychiatrist was charged with killing 13 soldiers and civilians and wounding more than two dozen others.
Across the street from the movie theater, a man who placed 15 crosses near Columbine High School after a 1999 massacre there has returned to Colorado with 12 crosses for the victims of Friday's shooting.
Greg Zanis, of Aurora, Ill., put up the 3 1/2-foot-tall crosses Sunday on a hill across the street from the Century 16 theater.
"PLANO, TX (ANS) -- When the news that Newtown, Conn., school massacre shooter Adam Lanza had Asperger’s Syndrome, the media immediately began to spew false information about autism. Autism is a neurodevelopment disorder, not a mental illness. Since the Dec. 14 attack that left 20 children and six adults dead, professionals who work in mental health and parents of children with autism and Asperger’s Syndrome have taken a stand to educate the public.
“They (the media) are trying to connect some dots, because that is what they do,” said Aimee Colbert, a pastoral counselor in Fort Worth. “Without knowing the truth is irresponsible, it is bad on their part. This type of reaction is especially trying on the people who have to deal with it.”
The media is not the only institution that needs help understanding mental health and developmental disorders; the church does too.
For years, the mental health community has felt the church needs to step beyond reading scripture and prayer to help parents and children of their congregations.
In 2011, author Edward Rogers, and psychologist Matthew Stanford and social worker Diana Garland of Baylor University, found in their study, “The Effects of Mental Illness On Families With Faith Communities,” that “mental illness of a family member can destroy the family’s connection with the religious community, leading many affected families to leave the church and their faith behind.”
The study, which appeared in the online journal “Mental Health, Religion, and Culture,” interviewed 6,000 participants from 24 churches representing four Protestant denominations. Researchers examined the impact of mental illness in a family on church involvement and spiritual practices. Stanford told Dr. Steve Grcevich in a February 2012 interview that approximately a quarter of the families in the survey are struggling with caring for a loved one with mental illness and it has disrupted their connect with God.
“Sadly, these families appear virtually invisible to the congregation as a whole,” said Stanford, who is a professor of psychology, neuroscience, and biomedical studies at Baylor University.
Colbert’s thoughts echo the article. She said churches should do more to address the mental and behavioral needs of their congregants, especially in the African American church.
“It is one of the things that has become a cancer, a virus. Now people are doing off-the-wall things. The church is about meeting needs, if your church has people with mental illness, it must be addressed. There are a lot of things outside of the Bible people need to know. The Bible is not against these things because the Bible doesn’t say it, Colbert said.
“I know of people who feel ashamed. They either feel isolated even stop going to church.”
